Disenchantment is an American fantasy animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for Netflix. The series is Groening's first production to appear exclusively on a streaming service; he previously created The Simpsons and Futurama for the Fox Broadcasting Company. Set in the medieval fantasy kingdom of Dreamland, the series follows the story of Bean, a rebellious princess, her naive elf companion Elfo, and her destructive "personal demon" Luci. Disenchantment stars the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Matt Berry, David Herman, Maurice LaMarche, Lucy Montgomery, and Billy West.

    • Yeah, Matt Groening are always like that though, he takes 2-3 seasons to get his shows off the floor and THEN the good stuff comes. Odds are good, if Netflix doesn't bitch out and make season 4 or 5 the last there's years of good stuff ahead.

  • They could have removed the mermaid character. She added nothing and I get the feeling that one of the animators just wanted to draw a bunch of mermaids. Nothing was gained from her or her episode, other than Bean's one night stand that maybe didn't happen.

  • Let me start by saying I'm a HUGE fan of Matt Groening's work. His Life in Hell comics I read and worshiped in the 80's. The Simpsons I felt was one of the greatest and most intelligent of comedies to ever hit TV (up to season 6 or so at least), so astutely making fun of the absurdities of work, school, religion and life in general! And Futurama, combining fantastic comedy, amazing sci-fi storytelling and even tugging at my emotions at times! So as you might imagine, I was excited for Disenchantment! I watched the first, second and third seasons, but as much as I want to like it, I found myself struggling to. Especially after just finishing the third season last night. It may sound strange to those of you who like this show, but I'm counter opposite of Doug's review, I feel this series has taken a few steps back from the previous season if anything. I feel like the show has potential, but it's being wasted. Disenchantment just feels so mediocre, so directionless, so all over the place with its plotting, story telling and jokes. I'm probably only still watching because it's one of Groening's works and the writers and actors behind it. And yeah, I do like the main characters, and the incredible visual imagery and animation. Yet I'm starting to feel the same frustration I did when The Simpsons hit seasons 10 and beyond, I keep waiting and hoping for it to get back on track, but it never does and gets worse. Unfortunately for Disenchantment I still feel like it hasn't reached its greatness yet, and I'm starting to wonder if it ever will. Kinda funny saying that because I generally mirror Doug's views and opinions on movies and TV shows, so hey, maybe I'm just being cynical. I don't get me wrong, I don't despise Disenchantment or anything like that, I'm just disappointed because I feel it could be so much more!

  • You can tell Matt Groening is trying to work out how to tell a focused arc. The Simpsons never committed to a long term arc aside from Nedna, and Futurama’s Fry and Leela relationship wasn’t a focused arc as much as it was a slow burn. Season 3 had too many elements to have a pay off for most of them, which is a shame because a lot of the worst qualities of the main trio were toned down. Spending nearly the whole season on Zog’s deteriorating mental health, he and us the audience got Chazzed.

  • I felt that this season was very "and then" and not really "therefore". I'm not sure exactly why I felt that, though it was more in the earlier episodes and not so much in the later episodes. Also, I agree with you about the mermaid being forced. Consider this: at the end of episode 5 Bean saves Elfo, and he asks her to save the other trapped creatures, and she does. Then they leave, and the episode ends. At the beginning of episode 6 he suddenly remembered the mermaid, and they go back and Bean rescued her, and that felt like it ruining the pacing. Also, before episode 6 the mermaid is portrayed as kind of a jerk, but in that episode she's suddenly nice. So it felt like this episode was written by a different writer (idk if that's true or not), and they sort of backpaddled on what the writers for previous episode wrote.

  • I enjoyed this season a lot. Now that I understand the mood of the show, I like it much more... the characters and the design/worldbuilding are what really shine here. It's definitely not all about the jokes. But on rewatching, I find that there is a lot of more subtle humor that comes through which might not be noticed at first. Also, there are some great set-pieces and action comedy that show some nice animation and timing skills. It is a show to take your time with. I like to watch the seasons all the way through at least 3 times to get the full flavor, so it is pitched perfectly for Netflix watching. Not Simpsons or Futurama, but different in a good way.

    Walrick2020Walrick2020Oy oldin
    • Yeah, I think same about the second half of the 3rd season. And it's also very symbolic: Arch-Druidess shows middle finger to Dreamland, King Zog slowly goes mad (it's not funny at all, it's painful to watch!), Bean's closest friends suddenly turn away from her, start acting like j-e-r-k-s. "THEY" are ruining Matt's beautiful creation, his Dreamland((. They totally "chazzed" it((.

  • The thing about the mermaid romance episode is that there doesn't appear to be a pay off. However, I think, considering the contents of that song, there is a plan for her and the mermaids in the future.

    lroselroseOy oldin
    • The lack of payoff is still a major flaw with the show. So many plot threads going back to season 1 that are still dangling. Elfo being half ogre is still not official stated through dialogue, only implied. The Maru prophecy with Dagmar and Bean has been left infuriatingly vague. The Very Thing being revealed came off as an afterthought, a plot thread abandoned at the start of season 2 and the Steamland thing is still at a loose end.

  • They should change the name of the show to "disappointment" Season 1 was good, but like every other show, they ruined it forever by injecting leftist ideology into the story. Season 2 was more of a political statement, I literally didn't laugh one time. This tactic is becoming quite popular, get the audience hooked on a show at season 1, then immediately start injecting their political beliefs into it.

It’s always teasing, mystery boxes, and then ending on a cliffhanger...again. I like the show but they really need to start having payoffs and answers for everything they’ve set up. I’ve been burned too many times by fantasy that always sets up and never delivers

  • Love the earlier episodes in Steamland and following the love story but as soon as they returned to the castle, it started ping-ponging from place to place, story to story and I actually began to lose track of who was related to what plot and how they tied in etc. The plot with getting rid of the King was brought up and then dropped- Oddball's motivation seems to be all over the place. Derrick suddenly getting sidelined was weird too, even though he had so much development early on in what could have made him a way more prominent and interesting character but it was just dropped for other story lines. I think the second season is still the best overall but the third was definitely funnier. Excited to see the fourth.

  • I really liked this season a lot. It was nice that there were some overarching stories and that we got to see so much more of this world. I wanna see more of Steamland, but that might just be my love of steampunk talking. Personally I liked the romance with the mermaid, it was sweet and believable even if kinda short and not exactly exceptionally special. The stuff done with the king was mostly pretty good, but I definitely got annoyed once or twice with the honking bits. It was funny at first but by the 50th time it was getting a bit grading. I also hope that the one character death (you know which one) isn’t permanent but so far it seems like some deaths aren’t so I’m not too worried. Also we need more Luci, I love that little devil

  • The mug joke would have been funnier if we didn’t have to see episode 6. The problem With the mermaid is that they introduce her as a stuck up character and then they expect you to like her. Also, the king making noises every episode got way too annoying. Steamland feels more like a crutch then a positive addition. Season 1 was great because the show felt like a medieval fantasy and with Steamland and Brentwood, Dreamland is the trash of the show. Season 1 is still the best of the three. Futurama is still Matt’s best show, Disenchantment is probably the worst (Simpson’s was an amazing show but should have been taken off the air decades ago) but still enjoyable.
