    • MK95 and MK Annihilation are both garbage, I'm kinda meh towards watching MK21. I loved the original games and the story for MK11. Tbh, I'm surprised to see Nostalgia Critic didnt do a awesomely theatrical and nonsensical review with skits and puns, that's what I've been truly waiting for.

    • I like what they've done with the characters. The movie has good pacing, combat is creative and satisfying to watch; the catchphrases felt a bit forced; gore is done just right, in my opinion. Two things, though: Sonya should be dead and Kano was throwing too much references, felt completely unnecessary and out of place. The original material handled very well, the cast is great (except Liu Kang, he feels out of place), but all did a great job. Not a big fan of the whole franchise, but I liked this movie. I think the director earned himself a huge credit.

  • Perfect opportunity to revive Old Vs New! The new mortal Kombat film is amazing but the old film has three things the new want can’t replicate: Cary is the definitive Shang stung and his charisma was missed. The theme song! Even if it only played during the credits or the final fight, I wanted to thrash my head back and forth to MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!!!!! And finally the main hero. While Cole isn’t necessarily a bad character, there was nothing really interesting about him either. Liu Lang in the original wasn’t much better but he had a charm and sincerity in his performance that cole just didn’t. Odd for me to say because I like Liu Lang’s portrayal in both films, but he works better as a main character. Still Joe Taslim was my favorite part of the film, all his fights were fun and Bi Han was already my favorite MK villain. Sad Gorro didn’t get more action but it was still better than the original.

  • I think the big difference between the old 1995 Mortal Kombat movie and this newer 2021 reboot is that they reflect the way the games were made and how the stories in those games were told The 1995 movie is like the 1990s Mortal Kombat games (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II and the Mortal Kombat 3 games including Trilogy and Ultimate) - story and character are barebones and simple; bigger emphasis is on the fighting scenes The 2021 movie is more like the reboot trilogy (MK9, MKX, MK11) - the experience is more cinematic because there is a very well-balanced blend of character development, story development, world development and excellent fighting scenes with fan service thrown in the mix. Doug needs to play the new Mortal Kombat games and see the cinematic experience it tries to create with its more well-rounded storyline (from Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn -> Shinnok -> Kronika and Cetrion, the stakes are raised higher and higher)

  • Was an MK fan up until the 3rd or 4th one. The first movie was decent, the second one was wonderfully terrible, like that movie King of The Kickboxers, with Billy Blanks... I would re-do this MK movie. This needs to be a series on HBO Max. At least four seasons. There is too much story to fit into a 2-hour time frame...

  • reviewers often go to easy on something, this new mk movie had good moments shure but it was a bad mk movie overall, they missed the mark with allot of things. subzero and scorpion where done pretty wel kano to kung lao was also nice but with the rest meh it didnt feel right to me. and for god sake man how can a champion of mk for centuries like goro lose to a dude who gets his ass kicked by a cmon earth fighter by some magical plot armor, cmon man thats just bad writting. in the first movie goro lost to johny cage but that was compleetly believable because he just outsmarted goro and goro was to cocky to even consider he could be beat by tricks. i do feel like youre holding back, you have some laughs that mask youre disappointment.

  • So even though I don't think the movie was the highest quality my personal enjoyment from watching it was pretty high. I also think that this a movie that would have greatly benefited from a slightly larger budget. Doug mentions the transitions and pacing from the editing but there other things as well. There were some scenes that probably needed an extra take or two and some of the special effects weren't complete. Now the things the movie did well I think they nailed though. It just would have been better to have some consistency overall. I didn't mind the new character of Cole either. I think the actor did fine with the limited material he was given but I think using Cole as the audience guide to Mortal Kombat wasn't a bad decision. Also making a part of Scorpion's bloodline was a good move although I think they could have been more creative with it.

  • I don’t get why everyone is so hung up on the fact that the movie didn’t actually have the tournament, in the entire game series, how many of them revolves around the tournament? Besides the first two and 9, it’s hardly focused on it. Now that the movie did well and WB knows there’s a lot of money to make, the follow up that will actually have the tournament can actually go all out. Godzilla: King of the monsters is an example of that happening. First movie was just Godzilla then the follow up was able to get more og monsters. Think of it that way and it makes sense why it’s done this way.

  • I know way to much lore for this series, lmao. Saw it with some buddies and on the drive back we were all just going over what we want in the sequel and how certain characters were off from the games. Which I get, not complaining about it. The games are amazing and I wanna see how it goes if/when MK 12 comes out in the future.

    Christopher TornowChristopher Tornow12 kun oldin
  • One of my issues was Cole, I mean he wasn't a bad character he just felt forced. They did Scoprion's backstory correct... until they had the baby survive, every single member of his clan dies which causes his desire for revenge, he's the last no one survives. Cole just felt like they needed a hero character, so they created their own, even though that role went to Lui Kang in the original, heck they could've used Johnny Cage, I feel the only reason he wass cut was he's a smart ass just like Kano, despite Kano being bad and Johnny good having characters with the same personality could dull the movie. My thought is they wanted the mascots to be the focus, being Sub Zero and Scorpion, what this series is known for despite Lui Kang being the main character, the winner of the 1st 3 tournaments, that way they attract more people. Spoilers Yeah that was one of my problems, some stuff felt rushed, some characters don't show up but were in the 1st game like Johnny Cage. They had characters from the 4th game show up, I think the 7th game (don't know when the vampire lady showed up in the series, I've played 1-3, Armageddon, 9 the remake, and X only because AVP). My biggest issues were Cole as I previously mentioned and killing Reptile, the secret fighter, the strongest character that helped Mortal Kombat's success, because no fighting game had done that before... and he's killed like in the 1st act, arguably just as famous as the mascots Sub Zero and Scorpion, killed off quick and easy.

  • It was a very “ok” movie for me. It had some great moments but then majority it felt like it was just dragging. Feels the same as the Legendary Godzilla movies, love it when the “monsters” were on (in this case, Subzero, Scorpion, and Kano) and then meh with the “human” scenes. Also hated how they written Raiden, he was way too inconsistent

  • I thought this movie was mainly about Outworld cheating before the tournament. The sequel(s) is supposed to be about the characters finding other fighters (Cage, etc) with the mark in preparation for the tournament. The tournament would be in MK 2 or 3.

  • Well Mortal Kombat was inspire by Enter The Dragon, I think the producer and director wanted something more realistic looking rather than fantasy looking. The movie seem like a continuation of the legacy of Scorpion which explains the Cole Young character.

  • If I knew going in that there wasn’t going to be a tournament I prob would have enjoyed it more. I kept checking the time and wondering how much time will we have for the actual tourney. I agree the settings and scene changes were jarring and never felt like I was there. I loved the gore without it being like a Saw movie type gross.

But I was able to recognize the characters and lore in the movie from what knowledge I did have and found the movie thoroughly enjoyable. There was just one question that was bugging me the whole movie...who is the main character? The whole time I was trying to figure out what character he was supposed to be from the games. After watching this review and a bunch of others, I now I realize why I couldn't figure it out. lol

  • The new Mortal Kombat movie was decent. My issues were mostly the editing and pacing, Reptile, CG Goro and how not dominant he was (I think the practical in the original film looked soooooo much better), no metal plate on Kano's face (yet he still shoots the laser from only that ONE eye 😂), Shang Tsung wasn't an old man, no Johnny Cage, Scorpion does his finisher without revealing his skull, and characters died that shouldn't have since this takes places PRE tournament and now they won't be in sequels if they're made. Also, the transferring tattoo thing was stupid and gave me nightmares of MK Annihilation.

  • I have agree with pretty much everything said here. The editing and pacing felt off; a bit on the quick and choppy side. Goro, while slow and barely functional in the original, at least looked creepy. He had that uncanny valley feel, whereas the new Goro kept reminding me of a really messed up Shrek. It was a fun movie and I enjoyed it. The humor, while a bit excessive at times, actually hit home for me and had me laughing. I was impressed as well, particularly with the intro scene. The gore was very befitting a Mortal Kombat film. I guess I could say, on a Mortal Kombat curve, it was good. It wasn’t an amazing film but I did enjoy it and am glad I watched it.
