  • That music score was so eerie. it's perfect. I also like how Bullock figured out where Joker was. Most of the time, he's comedic relief or generally unlikable, but every now and again we're shown how he managed to climb the ranks to detective. It makes him a more realistic character.

  • Something else of note, Francis here is voiced by George Dzundza, which seems to have been his introduction to the DCAU, as he would go on to voice the Ventriloquist (Arnold Wesker) and his dummy boss Scarface in this series, as well as Perry White later on in Superman The Animated Series, and would returns as Wesker and Scarface in the New Batman Adventures, as well as that asshole doctor in Batman and Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero. He has as many roles in the DCAU as Mark Hamill (Joker, Solomon Grundy, the Trickster, Ferris Boyle).

  • This is going to sound daft, but having read the original comic stories I'm glad Batman was able to stop the shark without killing it like he did in the comic (they excused it by having Joker comment it'd been affected by pollution and it probably didn't have long to live anyway, but I don't believe in stories treating animals, even dangerous ones, as disposable). "The Laughing Fish" also had a neat moment where Joker breaks the fourth wall a bit - pity that couldn't translate to TV.

  • Hey Walter! I completely agree with your assessment of this episode as one of the preeminent representations of the Joker throughout Batman the Animated Series. In a sense, it perfectly encapsulates the frenetic energy of the Joker and his mercurial temperament which makes him unpredictable and, consequently, threatening. He can be flippant and humorous in the scheming and execution of his plans, and the plans themselves have the capacity to be rather silly in their “Joker” theming and ostentation. However, like you mentioned with the distressing contortion of his victim’s faces, Joker’s propensity for twisted torture and violence targeting the most vulnerable, “harmless” people in Gotham makes him a truly terrifying, demented villain. It’s surely this juxtaposition of horror and humor which epitomizes the Joker and Mark Hamill’s amazing performance imbuing him with this nuance and inflection. It’s also rather funny to see the perversion of such a mundane, bureaucratic process like copyright law being co-opted by the Joker for his own bizarre purposes. In addition to the Joker, Harley had a few dry, clever lines as well, contributing to the levity of the episode. Overall, The Laughing Fish is a quintessential Joker-centric episode that certainly deserves to be remember fondly for its brilliant in writing and execution, as well as scarring us as children haha. I should also add how your voice-work and the delivery of your scripts always adds to the entertainment and interest of these episodes; it’s always varied in tone, pitch, and tempo, and appropriate to the themes and events of the episodes themselves. Excellent job as always, Walter!
