ABC's version of the Muppets pissed off a lot of fans, but was there anything that the one season show got right?

  • The Muppets is on of my favourite franchises - it frustrates me that their last few TV shows (This one, and Muppets now) have sucked. Can't they just do more parody movies in the same vain as Christmas Carol and Treasure island? I loved those!

  • I remember reading back when this first aired that some people actually wanted Kermit and Piggy to STAY broken up. And while I can see what they meant - Piggy is an angry control freak, showing a person (of either sex) beat up their significant other is now recognised as abuse and not a source of comedy - it again wouldn't be true to the spirit of the Muppets. Kermit and Piggy may not be perfect for each other but they still have a connection and to see them give up on that would be heart-breaking for not just the fans but the cast as well.

  • Lol, I wasn’t expecting Critics reason for not watching the show to be so damn similar to mine. The problem was that ABC aired the episodes on weekdays as opposed to the weekends, when kids had to sleep early and worry about school. Sure the target audience could’ve also been adults but then again how many adults would’ve remembered or even known about this show when they’re busy with more important stuff? After all how much marketing did this show get in order for people to know? I kinda remember only a few trailers for it after all.

  • I was really liking this show. I hate that it got canceled. It may not have been perfect but I certainly thought it was good enough to earn another season. And Miss Piggy and Kermit may have been broken up but it was shown throughout the season that thier love for each other hadn't really gone away. I so wanted to see in the next season if they were going to give their relationship another try!

  • I thought this show was amazing. We all love the heart felt Muppets and Disney gave us that with their first movie. This was a step in a different direction. I loved it. It reminds me a lot of Jim’s initial plan to have the Muppets for adults. I thought this show was very funny. The Muppets in this were definitely a lot less warm hearted but it didn’t take it too far and there are moments that remind us these are indeed the same heart felt Muppets we know. I completely believe this is what it would be like behind the scenes of the Muppets putting on shows. This was a really good show and I hate that it didn’t get a second chance!!

  • I'm guessing if they ever did another Muppets show/movie, they can do what "Community" did and dismiss this show as a "gas leak year"* *For context, Season 4 of the sitcom "Community" didn't have the original creator return and thus the season is derided for the characters acting out-of-character and dumber plots. When the creator returned for Season 5 the characters refered to the last year/season being affected by a gas leak that caused people to act differently.

  • So basically rather than have the series protagonist Kermit goes through a character Arc they just up and 180 his character and reverse the entire shows Direction because of some McGuffin deus ex machina higher up. All of this could have been solved with one name Mahna Mahna. Imagine that Muppet getting into a fight with Sean Penn and then rushing a paparazzi or some cameraman.

  • It was just...off. Friends who watched it said the same thing. It's not like we hated it, but for some reason it wasn't as good as it ought to be. The characters were entirely recognizable & faithful to the original show, but something wasn't right. It's odd, but talking with ppl about it later - what happened in the show was *in concept* actually funny and clever, but it wasn't executed well on screen. The production value and voice work was good, so it might have been comedic timing or tone. The first half of the season indeed felt too mean-spirited & harsh - but the second half became too sappy and predictable.

  • I binged this series as soon as it popped up on Disney plus. Some jokes worked for me, some jokes didn't, but I can see why it got the hate it did. It's for the same reason Jim couldn't get his primetime muppet show. People are in the belief that muppets don't lend themselves to adult situations. That the goofy antics of the muppets just don't work if their trying to reach an older audience.

  • I never bothered to see this show, and the main reason why is-I'm not sure how many people agree with me on this-I just wanted to see The Muppet Show again. I don't like that The Muppets are trying to chase after the latest trends now, like with this show being a mockumentary type or the Muppets Now show on Disney Plus being inspired by creator culture on the internet. I just want to see them do their own thing again. Sure, The Muppet Show was also a riff on a popular format back then, but they made it their own and made it feel unique and endearing. There was a magic that show had that none of the other Muppet shows can seem to capture. i would rather they just go back to that formula or never bother to make another one again.

  • I loved this show. I felt like as long as you put your mindset at "I want to see what the Muppets are like behind the show, when they aren't just being clowns for our amusement." I feel like if people could get their head's wrapped around that they could love this show as much as I did. For example people saying Kermit is always the upbeat, positive character who does his best to find the bright side of ever situation even if it drives him nuts. That Kermit is a character created for the Muppet show. The Kermit we get on this show is his real self. He isn't just a character anymore you have to view him like a real person who's job it is to produce this talk show. Its a pretty meta concept when you think about it since the Muppets aren't real people. I mean its a character inside a character wrapped around a doll with a hand up its butt. 🤣

This was Kermit, who gave us "The Rainbow Connection", it was almost too heartbreaking for my mental sanity to think he's given up on hope and silver linings.... This new current Muppet Show on Disney+ is crap. I checked out after episode 3. Not funny, too cheap and cheesy, and new Kermit voice too distracting. Too kiddy for adults, not entertaining enough for Kids. Failure.

  • In an alternate universe this show is currently on it’s 6th/7th season. Kermit and Piggy got back together in the opening of season 2 and it’s one of the most popular shows on tv. Meanwhile here, we got Muppets now. Which was funny but missed the spirit of the Muppet’s even more than this show initially did (mainly due to its lack of music and how little any of the characters got to interact). I’m just hoping they start making Disney+ exclusive Muppet movies because that would honestly be amazing.
